Sometimes a backyard just needs a reset. Not a full overhaul - just the right plants, clean edging, and fresh mulch to pull everything together. That's exactly what we tackled here in Overland Park.
We started by installing bed edging to give each planting area a defined shape and a clean separation from the lawn. From there, we got to work on plant selection and placement. A mix of shrubs, ornamental grasses, hostas, and perennials were planted throughout the beds - giving the space variety in color, texture, and height without feeling chaotic. A young tree was also planted as a focal point, adding some vertical interest and long-term structure to the yard.
Once the plants were in, we laid fresh dark mulch across the entire bed. That's one of those details that people underestimate. A good layer of mulch doesn't just look sharp - it helps retain moisture around new plants, keeps weeds down, and gives everything that finished, intentional look.
What we ended up with is a backyard that actually feels designed. The beds have shape. The plants have room to grow. And the whole space feels put together in a way it didn't before. That's the goal every time - not just adding plants, but creating something that works well together and holds up over time.
Good landscaping doesn't happen by accident. It takes the right plant choices, proper installation, and attention to the small stuff - like clean edges and proper mulch depth. If your backyard beds are overdue for some attention, this is what that process looks like when it's done right.
