Overgrown, tired beds are one of the most common things we hear about from homeowners. The plants are still alive, but nothing looks intentional anymore - and keeping up with it feels like a chore that never ends. That's exactly the kind of situation this yard was in before we got started.

What we wanted to do here was give the beds a clean slate without stripping out everything that was already working. We brought in fresh decorative gravel throughout - a mix of rounded river rock that gives the beds a natural, finished look without demanding a lot of upkeep. Gravel like this does a lot of heavy lifting. It keeps weeds down, holds moisture, and honestly just makes everything around it look more intentional.

The plant selection was a key part of the design. We worked in a mix of shrubs, ornamental grasses, hostas, and deep-burgundy heuchera for color contrast against the lighter stone. Compact evergreen shrubs were placed around the front of the house to give the beds some year-round structure. Nothing was just thrown in randomly - placement was thought through so the beds have balance from multiple angles.

The edging along the driveway and lawn line ties it all together. A clean, curved edge is one of those details that people notice even if they can't name what it is. It separates the bed from the lawn sharply, which makes the whole front of the house read as polished rather than patchy. That line matters more than most people realize.

The end result is a yard that looks genuinely cared for - and more importantly, one that's a lot easier to maintain going forward. Less mulch to replace every season, cleaner lines, and plants that have room to fill in nicely. That's the kind of work we enjoy doing.
